The Inspiration Behind The Foundation
To think about MaryEllen brings memories of a beautiful, bright and courageous young woman who has inspired the creation of our foundation. MaryEllen displayed a compassion for others, even during her most difficult private struggle with Lupus.
MaryEllen was all about living everyday to its fullest. Throughout her school years she participated and excelled in both her activities and her studies. From Shelton High School to the University of Connecticut to the working world she left a legacy of excellence, adventure and lasting friendship.
While pursuing a dream to become a television reporter, she was diagnosed with Lupus. MaryEllen recognized that she had choices, even in the face of great adversity. Her choices are what set her apart. Faced with numerous hospitalizations, kidney failure, a transplant failure, hip replacements, she believed in herself and created an amazing aura of optimism.
Her ten year battle with Lupus, although physically challenging, was filled with celebration.
Family events, occasions with friends, vacations and athletic pursuits were all highlights of her life. MaryEllen focused on her good fortune and the blessings in her life. And she passed that blessing with the desire to help other. As a volunteer for the Lupus Society she was recognized with several awards.
She was a model of kindness and love. What better way to honor her memory than to replicate her generous joyous spirit. She is the inspiration for the MaryEllen Hames Dellacato Foundation.
